Let’s talk about sliding scale prices! Black Cat Judaica products are handwoven. This work is time consuming, and takes effort. We invest in high quality materials, and put kavanah into every day of work. We pay ourselves a living wage. The prices listed on the shop pages are “target prices.” They cover materials and a $15 hourly wage for the weaver. Our goal is to make our products accessible to working-class/low-income Jews, but we also need to be able to earn a living wage. Thus, our prices may be higher than you were expecting. Here’s where the sliding scale scale comes in. In order for us to keep food on the table and keep our low-income Jewish comrades bedecked in gorgeous Judaica, it is helpful (read: necessary) for those who can pay more than our target price to do so. Here are some rough guidelines:
If you make around $20,000 (USD) a year, like Nelly and Ira do together, please pay the target price.
If you make less than that, feel free to pay less.
If you make more than $25,000 (USD) a year, please consider paying more than the target price.
With this system, we can help all Jews maintain meaningful and beautiful Jewish practice.
